Designing a deck is no easy task. And building it? It’s a lot more than many would expect. I wanted to give you a sense of some of the most basic steps involved in the process.

Properly designing a deck and thoroughly planning your deck build guarantees a smooth construction process. You should learn these initial steps before starting your deck build.

Step 1: Decide Whether You’re Going to Hire or DIY

Taking the DIY route can save you money. But you’ve got to have the skills and experience to do it well. Even if you can build it, there’s still the process of getting the right permits and following local building codes.

The DIY route is also a large time commitment. Selecting improper support structures or materials may cause durability concerns. Contractors do cost more. But they’ll handle everything. So, if you have any doubts, start looking around for deck builders near you.

Step 2: Find The Perfect Place for Your Deck

Once you’ve decided whether to hire or do it yourself, you can really get going on designing a deck.

It’s time to ask yourself: where do I want to put this thing? How big should it be? Many decks attach to the home’s back or side for convenient access. Detached decks offer advantages for sloped yards or garden spaces. When deciding on placement, think about how much sun each area gets. You want it to receive some level of protection from the sun. And you want it to be private. Is there an area of your yard that people can easily see? These questions help out a lot.

Your deck area should not take up too much space. You want to have a good balance between yard and deck space. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule. You’ll want to think about how much space you’ll need based on things you’ll want to have on your deck — I’m thinking about seating and outdoor grills, things like that.

Any deck design must also account for height. A sloped property requires extra support structures such as footings and reinforced beams which will increase both the complexity of construction and the total expense. Railings become a crucial safety feature for many decks that must be built up.

Step 3: Calculate the Costs of Designing a Deck

Deck construction costs vary based on the deck size, chosen materials, labor requirements, and any extra features included. Here are some ticket items you’ll see:

Substructure: The substructure is one of the most expensive pieces to consider when designing a deck. There’s a lot that goes into it. Footings and framing materials are some of the terms to know. They provide essential support for structural integrity.

Decking Material: Building with pressure-treated wood minimizes expenses, but composite and hardwood materials will raise costs. However, they can save you money in the long term. Trex and TimberTech are two of the most popular brands on the market.

Permits: Deck construction requires municipal permits and fees, which vary depending on where you live. Many cost a few hundred dollars.

Labor Costs: Although hiring a contractor increases overall costs, they provide professional knowledge and efficient work execution. Deck projects with advanced designs and multiple levels typically need extended construction time and increased labor expenses.

Step 4: Get a Building Permit

Deck construction requires municipal permits in most areas especially when building elevated decks or decks that connect to homes. The permit process guarantees adherence to local safety standards along with zoning laws.

You have to submit detailed architectural plans that show the deck’s measurements, materials used, and structural elements. If you’re considering building a deck soon, get a free 3D deck design from our team. In addition to helping you in designing a deck, it can provide some insight on what to think through with the permit process.

Contractors hired for deck construction usually take responsibility for managing the permit application process. To prevent delays in your deck construction project, you should reach out to your local building department when you decide to build the deck on your own.

Step 5: Choosing Decking Materials and Essential Tools

Once you’ve got the permits, it’s time to settle on the materials you want. Each type comes with pros and cons.

Pressure-Treated Wood: Pressure-treated wood stands out as the least expensive choice. It offers some protection from decay and insect damage but demands consistent maintenance through staining and sealing.

Cedar or Redwood: Cedar and redwood offer natural insect and decay resistance along with a rich appearance but often cost more than pressure-treated alternatives.

Composite Decking: Composite decks combine wood fibers and plastic to create a highly durable surface that needs minimal maintenance but carries a higher initial price.

Aluminum or PVC: Aluminum and PVC options provide exceptional durability and minimal maintenance needs but cost a ton upfront.

The success of constructing your own deck depends on using the proper tools. You should have some essential tools such as a circular saw, power drill, measuring tape, level, and post-hole digger ready for deck building. Miter saws provide accurate cutting while renting a concrete mixer saves both time and effort when working with concrete footings.

Step 6: Create an Inviting Outdoor Space

After completing your deck construction you should focus on creating a stylish outdoor space that is both functional and comfortable. Your deck will benefit from railings that provide safety and visual charm through options like wooden balusters and modern metal or glass panels. Lighting can also elevate the look of your deck.

Add in some furniture to really make your deck a space where people want to spend time. (While you’re looking, check out these tips I wrote on finding good furniture at HomeGoods).

Anything you buy should be able to stand up to the Long Island weather. I’d also consider retractable awnings or large patio umbrellas to give you and your deck some relief from the sun.

Add in some plants around the deck’s perimeter to really make it pop. Climbing vines transform your deck into a seamless extension of your garden space while softening its appearance. Outdoor curtains and decorative lattice panels provide privacy by blocking views.

Quick Summary

By following these six steps, you can create the deck of your dreams. I’ve walked you through the main components of building and designing a deck. Of course, there’s more in the details. But these tips will get you started. Be careful when considering your design choices and materials, which are a big part of the process.

You must also think through the costs and decide between doing it yourself or hiring a pro.
