Your deck takes a beating year-round. If it’s not raining, it’s the sun. If it’s not snow, it’s the salt air and wind. The best deck paints of 2025 not only make your deck look better, but they also protect it.

Look, Long Island’s weather can be particularly harsh on outdoor surfaces. Between humid summers, salty air, and freeze-thaw cycles, choosing the right deck paint isn’t just about looks — it’s about longevity. And don’t just go the cheap route. Invest in high-quality paint to help keep your deck in good condition. Bookmark this post. Consider it your first step in finding a product that works best for your deck.

Why (And Why Not) Paint Your Deck?

Deck paints provide a protective barrier that shields deck wood from moisture, UV rays, and everyday wear and tear. It works differently from stains. Paints create a surface coating, and stains penetrate the wood.

RELATED: Best Deck Stains

One of the nice things, too, is that the best deck stains can help create slip resistance. If you have an older wooden deck, a fresh coat of paint can breathe new life into your outdoor space.

It can help hide imperfections that stains might highlight. There are some trade-offs to consider. Paint requires more prep work than stain. Over the years, it will chip and need to be scraped before reapplying (and that’s a ton of work).

If you love that natural wood look, you’ll need a stain. Most paints conceal the wood grain. But if you’re set on painting your deck, here is my list of the best deck stains of 2025.

The Best Deck Paints of 2025

Keep in mind that I’m not ranking these — I don’t have the time for that. I’ve used a wide range of products in my decades of deck work and spoken with many professionals and homeowners, which gives me valuable insights.

I’m also not suggesting that you use any of these without conducting your own research. Deck paints vary in their success rates, and not every product will work for your deck. I always recommend testing any paint or stain on a small section of your deck before applying it.

INSL-X Sure Step Acrylic Anti-Slip Coating

People swear by the INSL-X line by Benjamin Moore. It’s not a bad price point, and the real plus is that the acrylic coating enhances traction and can withstand deck cleaning.

When using this deck paint, the product recommends using a cross-brushing technique when applying the second coat. It covers 80 to 120 square feet per gallon, so you won’t have to break the bank by buying too many gallons. For homeowners wanting professional results without the premium price tag, this is a smart choice.

Here is a quick overview of why I put it on the list:

  • Dries fast and goes on easily — fills and seals minor cracks as you paint
  • Built for heavy use — this slip-resistant formula handles stairs, walkways, and high-traffic patios
  • Superior bonding — sticks well to concrete and stays put
  • Quick turnaround time — dry to touch in 1-2 hours, ready for a second coat in 8
  • Fast curing schedule — light foot traffic after 24 hours, full heavy use in 4-5 days
  • Color options — comes in six standard colors plus white for custom tinting

KILZ Over Armor Wood & Concrete Resurfacer

If your deck is worn (but not necessarily in need of replacement), KILZ Over Armor is a great option. It has a smooth coating that fills cracks and effectively hides the imperfections of weathered wood. It’s a great option for many Long Island decks that have had their fair share of run-ins with our weather and are starting to look worse for wear.

What I like most about this product is its versatility. It works on both wood and concrete surfaces. You can use it on deck floors, railings, pool areas, and sidewalks, which can give you a more uniform look.

The application requires some patience. You need two coats for optimal durability, and coverage is on the lower side at 75 square feet per gallon for the recommended two-coat system. Stick to 50-90°F when applying. The 4-6 hour recoat window is reasonable, but you’ll need to wait 24-48 hours before allowing light foot traffic.

The color selection is a bit limited. They have “wood stain” and “concrete” tones — but those are the looks most people will want anyway.

TotalBoat TotalTread Non-Skid Marine Deck Paint

When I researched this paint, it became clear why it’s so well-suited for marine applications. It’s a polyurethane-based paint that utilizes Propyltex particles instead of traditional silica. The texture works a bit differently but produces a nice, clean look on decks. It’s super comfortable to walk on, according to some of the reviews I read (the company mentioned something about how they don’t use sand additives so it’s less grainy and more durable, but the science behind that is beyond me).

The application is straightforward. Unlike other textured paints, where you’re constantly stirring to keep particles from settling, TotalTread stays mixed. It’s easy to apply.

Many claim one coat is all you need, but I’d leave that up to you. It does have great coverage: 300 feet per gallon. One nice thing about it is that it stays looking sharp even after cleaning.

It comes in Light Gray, White, Kingston Gray, and Sand Beige — but you can mix colors or blend with TotalBoat’s other marine paints if you want something custom.

It is one of the more expensive paints I have on this list of the best deck paints of 2025.

ArmorGarage Super Wood Deck Paint – Smooth

If you’re tired of repainting your deck every few years, ArmorGarage’s Super Wood Deck Paint might be worth a look. It’s a long-lasting, industrial-grade product. Again, be wary of any product’s claim. No paint can restore a deck that has serious issues and needs replacements.

ArmorGarage claims their formula allows the wood to breathe, enabling moisture to escape instead of building up and causing problems (which is great if it’s true).

Coverage is solid at 250-300 square feet per gallon. The color selection is impressive as well — 21 options ranging from classic grays and browns to more adventurous choices, such as Blue Reef and British Racing Green. Having this many choices in a deck paint is unusual and gives you real flexibility to match your home’s exterior.

Quick Summary

The right deck paint comes down to your specific situation. Just a quick rundown of my list of the best deck paints of 2025: INSL-X Sure Step delivers professional results without breaking the bank. KILZ Over Armor excels at hiding imperfections while providing a solid layer of protection.

TotalBoat TotalTread is a premium choice that’s excellent (but at a high cost). Its marine-grade durability makes it great for entertaining.

ArmorGarage’s breathable formula is intriguing and long-lasting.

Even the best deck paint is only as good as your prep work. Take the time to clean, scrape, and prime properly — it’s what separates a paint job that lasts two years from one that goes the distance. Your deck protects your home’s structure, so protect your deck with quality materials and proper application.
