Unless you have a composite deck, you’re going to need to put in some work to keep your deck clean. Summer is fast approaching. You want your deck looking good, right? Of course you do! So make sure you’re following these steps, and you’ll be set.

1. Sweep Regularly

Dust and debris accumulate quickly. During the spring, there are all types of stuff in the air. Regular sweeping helps keep unwanted materials from embedding themselves into your deck. If you skip sweeping, you will give water more things to hold on to. Your deck is more likely to develop mold or wood rot issues in the future. A stiff-bristled broom provides the most effective cleaning results, especially when cleaning corners and seams.

2. Hose Down Your Deck (But Not Every Day)

Your deck needs brief rinse downs. Not often, but it is something you should be doing on occasion. Using a garden hose with normal water pressure will remove dirt and pollen from deck surfaces. Regular deck cleaning should be performed about twice per month — especially if you have a lot of guests out on your deck. Don’t do it too frequently. Too much water can encourage mold growth.

3. Remove Leaves and Other Organic Debris Promptly

Leaves are more than just unsightly—they trap moisture. Unattended moisture creates conditions for mildew and fungus growth and wood decay development. In addition to sweeping, which we just went over, regular leaf cleaning through leaf blowers or brooms should be done, especially when winds become heavy and rain starts to fall.

4. Quickly Clean Spills and Stains

A glass of wine tipped over, a BBQ stain, eh, no big deal. Let too much time pass, and those stains can cause problems. They can seep into the wood. Use warm soapy water and a soft brush to clean food and drink stains. Baking soda can be used as an oil absorber before you scrub the affected area with a vinegar and water mixture.

5. Prevent and Remove Mildew

Mildew tends to develop stealthily. Your deck needs proper ventilation. It needs to be dry, too. A white vinegar water solution can be used for mildew removal through gentle scrubbing. Deck cleaning solutions containing mildew-killing agents can also do the job.

6. Inspect Deck for Damage Every Season

At the start of each season, it’s a good idea to give your deck a look over.

A thorough inspection should show you boards if any boards are loose and if nails have popped up. You’ll also notice splinters and signs of rot. Early detection of these issues stops future costly repairs. It is necessary to verify that your deck maintains its level position and structural stability during this time.

7. Re-Stain or Seal As Needed

The sun and rain serve up a one-two punch to your deck. Over time, they break down your deck’s protective coating. By staining and sealing your deck every one to three years — depending on your deck’s needs — you’re going to extend its life for years to come.

Pro Tip: Make sure you clean your deck and allow it to dry for 48 hours before applying stains and seals.

8. Rearrange Your Furniture

Heavy patio furniture and planters can leave marks, cause uneven wear, or trap moisture. Give your deck a chance to breathe. Rearrange your furniture from time to time.

Bonus Tip: Add Some Shade

Protecting your deck from environmental elements, particularly sunlight, is a great way to increase its lifespan. The combination of UV rays with rain and snow causes deck materials to fade, warp, and eventually crack, while moisture accumulation leads to mildew growth. A permanent or retractable shade structure, including pergolas, gazebo awnings, and patio umbrellas, effectively minimizes sun damage to your deck.

Quick Summary

You don’t have to do a ton to keep your deck in good shape. Keeping your deck swept and clear of debris is crucial. You’ll also want to keep it sealed to keep out moisture. A good deck stain will help against UV rays, but follow the bonus tip: a little shade can help (but not too much because you want the sun to dry up any moisture).
